You should use the newest drivers from Portage 

emerge ieee80211 ipw2200 ipw2200-firmware

If you want the light on your laptop enabled, edit /etc/modules.d/ipw2200 (/etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200 on Ubuntu) and add 

options ipw2200 led=1
